Important Ownership & Maintenance Notes

Because this engine is now over a decade old, its condition is entirely dependent on its maintenance history.

  • DEC Compatibility: The DEC (Digital Electronic Control) system on this model is sophisticated. Ensure all control modules and wiring harnesses are inspected for corrosion, as electronic issues are more complex to diagnose than traditional cable-steer systems.

  • 100-Hour/Annual Service: Consistent service is non-negotiable. Ensure you have records for:

    • Oil & Filter: Changed every 100 hours or annually.

    • Lower Unit/Gear Lube: Checked for water intrusion (milky appearance).

    • Water Pump/Impeller: Recommended replacement every 100–300 hours depending on usage.

    • Anodes: Crucial for saltwater longevity; replace them when they are 50% corroded.

  • Vapor Separator Tank (VST) & Filters: The VST is critical on EFI engines. If the engine has been sitting for long periods, the VST filter may be clogged by degraded fuel, which can cause poor performance or stalling.

  • Fuel Management: This engine requires 89-octane fuel and must be protected from ethanol phase separation. Always use a high-quality fuel stabilizer and ensure you have a dedicated 10-micron fuel/water separating filter between the tank and the engine.

Inspection Checklist for Used Units

If you are evaluating this engine for potential purchase:

  1. Diagnostic Download: Have a technician connect the Yamaha Diagnostic System (YDS) to pull the actual hours, overheat history, and active fault codes.

  2. Compression Test: All six cylinders should be within 10% of each other.

  3. Trim/Tilt Performance: Ensure it operates through its full range without “bleeding down” or stuttering.

  4. Propeller Shaft: Inspect for any play or signs of impact (bent shaft), which can indicate the lower unit has suffered a hard strike.
